Tullahoma, TN
An exciting career opportunity exists for entry-level Instrumentation, Data and Control (ID&C) System Engineers with primary responsibility for upgrading and maintaining sensors, data acquisition  and automated control systems employed in the ground testing of aerospace systems at simulated flight conditions. Engineers hired into these roles may perform duties related to instrumentation and data acquisition systems, automated control systems, or some combination of both.

Instrumentation and Data System related duties involve employing the concepts of electronics; sensor selection and calibration; signal conditioning; analog-to-digital conversion; analog and digital signal processing; and data acquisition, storage and processing to design, implement, operate and/or maintain the systems required to make the highly complex and accurate measurements required to characterize test article performance while undergoing ground test and evaluation. Typical measurements include force, strain, pressure, temperature, vibration, acceleration. acoustics, etc.

Control System related duties include applying equations of motion, control theory, electronics and software skills to develop system requirements, specifications, and designs to perform various process and motion control functions, while assisting in system installation and deployment. Typical systems include motion control systems for precision positioning of aircraft models in wind tunnels, plant control systems to ensure delivery of specified test conditions, and/or facility and process control systems to measure and sustain test conditions.

Candidates will perform work, generally within Instrumentation, Data Acquisition, and Control System Engineering, which involves the preparation, interpretation or review of calculations, specifications, plans, investigations, surveys, structures, systems or equipment. Candidates will evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering methods, techniques, procedures and criteria, using independent judgment in making adaptations and modifications. Typical work tasks performed will include the following:

  • Interface with internal and/or external customers to ensure understanding of system and/or test requirements.
  • Development of system and subsystem requirements.
  • Instrumentation, Data Acquisition and/or Control System design, development, maintenance, and/or test operations support.
  • System and/or test configuration design, including conceptual and detailed sketches and layouts.
  • Preparation of specifications and design calculations.
  • Preparing designs, drawings, data, engineering studies and reports.
  • Preparation of material quantity estimates for test and/or design projects.
  • Use of engineering computer aided design/computer aided engineering (CAD/CAE) tools.
  • System troubleshooting and return-to-service.
  • System Verification and Validation Test Development/Execution.
  • Draft letters for replies to vendor correspondence.
  • Monitor and report progress on test and/or development project milestones.
  • Review design documents of equipment manufacturers or subcontractors and prepare comments and recommendations.

Basic technical knowledge of engineering systems, engineering calculations, applications of engineering methods and construction methods and materials, and application of computer aided engineering (CAE)/computer aided design (CAD) tools to engineering problems. Passed Fundamentals of Engineering or equivalent examination from a recognized state licensing board. Practical work experience in design engineering or other relevant types of engineering such as systems startup, field engineering, or plant operation in large industrial plants, utilities, process plants or other engineering/construction firms. Coursework or experience in any of the following:
  • Transducers, sensors, electrical circuits, signal processing, and data acquisition systems used to measure temperature, pressure, force, flow, acceleration, vibration, and other physical phenomena common to aerospace systems testing.
  • Design or application of sensors used to convert physical phenomenon into electrical signals.
  • Signal processing and analysis methodologies including analog and digital filtering methodologies.
  • Application of Analog-to-Digital and Digital-to-Analog conversion methodologies. Coursework or experience in the integration of sensors, signal conditioning, filtering, A/D conversion, etc. in the measurement of physical phenomenon.
  • Development and/or application of Instrumentation and Data Acquisition software.
